United, we can make a difference

With about 110 stakeholders, we make a difference every day. Together, we work on a waste-free Netherlands to prevent food waste!

Throughout the food chain, work is being done to curb food waste. Companies and organisations combine their knowledge, strengths and network in order to develop and implement innovative solutions. The valorisation of waste flows to produce food or feed often requires adjustments to the chain, as well as a party that can process those waste flows.

Food waste in the Netherlands

Food waste in the NetherlandsA circular economy leads to reduced food waste, making it a crucial objective. A quarter of all the food in the Netherlands goes to waste every year. The Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling aims to curb food waste throughout the food chain. We do so by preventing food waste where possible and valorising waste flows.

Why is preventing food waste so important?

Reducing food waste will contribute to:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • A circular economy that keeps resources in the chain;
  • Reduced land use and biodiversity loss;
  • A flexible food production system that offers sufficient food.

The United Against Food Waste Foundation seeks to make the Netherlands one of the first countries to reduce food waste by half. This will make the Netherlands a frontrunner in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.

Looop's efforts to achieve a 100% sustainable world without waste form an important contribution to two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We contribute to SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals.

Circular animal protein chain

Waste-free eggs or sustainable meat; two circular chain concepts that a cluster of companies, knowledge institutes and social organisations, including Looop, will work on as part of the Circular Food Center.

The Circular Food Center is an initiative of the United Against Food Waste Foundation. Its goal is a circular animal protein chain that sees large-scale valorisation of waste flows to produce livestock feed.

Livestock feed made of food waste has a significantly lower CO2 footprint compared to traditional feed. Circular livestock feed will contribute to reduced strain on natural resources, less biodiversity loss, reduced dependency on the global resource market and a flexible food system. The valorisation of waste flows (including co-products) will make the ambition of reducing food waste in the Netherlands by 1 billion kilograms per year feasible.

As part of the cluster, companies from the entire chain work together to offer circular products. We aim to scale up innovations in order to close cycles with all chain partners.

Looop against food waste

Throughout the entire food industry chain, there are opportunities to use resources more efficiently.

The food production process results in waste flows, also known as co-products. Back in the day, these co-products would simply be disposed of. A shame, as these co-products are full of nutrients that form an excellent addition to the feed rations of cows or pigs. Co-products form the foundations of high-grade livestock feed and tasty pet food, are an excellent breeding ground for insects and are used to generate green energy.

We retrieve these co-products from the food and fermentation industry and valorise them, so they can be reused for a variety of different purposes. This way, we reintroduce organic waste flows into the chain, to close the cycle.

The production of foodstuffs generates co-products. Waste flows, also known as co-products, originate from the food industry. At Looop, we give them a second chance. Based on the Looop Ladder, we optimally valorise co-products. For instance, co-products are an excellent addition to the rations of pigs and cows, they can be used as high-grade pet food, form an ideal breeding ground for insects and can be utilised to generate green power.

This way, we fight food waste and contribute to a 100% circular society.
